Blog: Association of Professional Landscape Designers on Sustainable Landscaping Practices

The Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD) offers references, guides and links to help with the various aspects of sustainability landscaping:

APLD Guide to Sustainable Soils: A document that outlines the main issues landscape professionals should know about soils: from the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soil and their interactions to the role of soils in sustainability.

Lawns: Guidelines for Creating Environmentally Responsible Landscapes: This publication represents the landscape design community’s desire to better assist in making more prudent and informed environmental decisions in residential landscapes. Consequences of previous decision-making now threaten not only the well being of the air, water, land, and wildlife, but of our own community as well. This material suggestion we work together to help redefine the lawn into a friendly element of our everyday landscape.

Water in the Landscape -- APLD Guidelines for Designing Landscapes That Respect Water ResourcesThis is a summary of water management from a sustainability perspective.

Native Plants in the Landscape -- APLD’s Commitment: This piece defines native plants and presents an overview of their importance in the landscape.

The Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES) – a set of voluntary national guidelines and performance benchmarks for sustainable landscape design, construction and maintenance practices.

Lawn Reform Coalition – a coalition of gardening and environmental advocates based in the United States.

U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) – a non-profit trade organization based in Washington, D.C. that promotes sustainability in how buildings are designed, built, and operated, responsible for the green building certification program known as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).

Living Building Challenge – a philosophy, advocacy tool and certification program developed by the International Living Future Institute that addresses development at all scales, and comprising seven performance areas: site, water, energy, health, materials, equity and beauty.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency: Green Infrastructure – an explanation of green infrastructure and a compilation of tools, resources and case studies.

Irrigation Promotion

irrigation-newsHappy New Year from all of us at Growth Spurts! This is the perfect time of year to plan for the upcoming spring season. It is also a time for us as a company to set new goals for the coming season as well. Our main goal this year is to expand our irrigation service clientele. How does this affect me you ask? Well, for every neighbor, friend or work partner you recommend us to (that we start doing irrigation work for) you will receive a $10.00 credit on your service bill. This credit will be applied on your bill with the tag line: Thank you for the referral! If you are not currently a customer but would like to be, it is as simple as contacting our office and asking to be a irrigation customer. By mentioning you saw this on our website we will also offer you a $10.00 discount on your first service. It is our way of saying thanks for letting us service your home.

Proper Landscape Drainage

landscape drainageThe new year may bring notice to many problem areas in your yard. Look for areas in your yard that may be holding water or staying damp as a result of the wet conditions in our rainy season. Let us know if we can help to install a drainage system to alleviate the water. Running down spouts away from the house (minimum of 10 feet) will help protect your foundation from sitting in water and eroding the concrete. Dry creek beds can be installed to beautify a swale running through the yard. Catch basins and french drains can be installed as well to eliminate areas of standing water against fences or low areas of the yard.

Lawn Spraying

lawn-care-newsThis time of year it is important to get your lawn analyzed and sprayed by a lawn company to avoid the dreaded crabgrass, poanna and troublesome weeds that pop up if your lawn is not treated. Most lawn companies offer a seven time per year treatment of weeds as well as fertilization to keep your lawn healthy and vigorous throughout the season. They also offer price breaks the first part of the year as well to gain additional clients.

Although we do not offer that particular service, we recommend Davis Lawn who has an outstanding reputation for serving Memphis, North Mississippi and the surrounding areas. Call Lee for a free competetive price quote at 901-413-8356. Mention this blog to receive half off your initial treatment through the month of January.

Landscape Project / Pool Projects

custom pool designThis is a great time to start planning for your new landscape or pool project. Winter months are slower than others as far as our work load. Prepare now to plan that spring project and beat the rush of spring business. Typical pool projects range in time from ten days to two months depending on weather conditions and scope of the project. Landscape plantings can be installed any time of the year, but especially now. This is the time to transplant existing trees, shrubs or groundcovers to prepare them for the rains in March and April and get them established before the heat of the summer.

We look forward to a successful year and that can only happen with the thanks of our great customers. If you aren't a customer yet, Please give us a call when you have something coming up. We would love the opportunity to serve you!
